David Schmidt

David Schmidt of Rush City died peacefully at home Tuesday, June 18, 2019 at the age of 68.

David William Schmidt was born September 7, 1950 to Vernon and Joan (Olson) Schmidt in Saint Paul, Minnesota.

If you wanted to know his cause of death, he would have told you that it was none of your business. He lived his life the way he wanted to and survived several years beyond the experts’ expectations.

David served in the Army, was a postal carrier and a farmer but most importantly, he was a family man. Family was very important to him. Holidays, birthdays and celebrations of any kind were best enjoyed together. He loved going to all the activities the children and grandchildren were involved in. He was often found attending concerts, dance recitals, sporting events and ball tournaments. He took many vacations with the granddaughters and fishing trips with the boys. He loved fishing on the great lakes and even caught a few now and then.

David and Mary went on the trip of a lifetime to Alaska and talked about it often. He was a great storyteller and practical joker! He could and would talk to anyone and if you were extra special – David was sure to give you a little sass with a smile! Some of his favorite pastimes were coffee with friends and watching his cattle roam the fields of his farm.

David is survived by his wife of 48 years Mary Schmidt; children Dave (Mary) Schmidt, Will (Wendy) Schmidt, Jim (Glenda) Schmidt all of Rush City; 8 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; siblings Ken (Marie) Schmidt of North Carolina, Tom (Grace) Schmidt of Chisago City, Vernon (Linda) Schmidt, Jr. of Iron River, Wisconsin, Cheryl (Ron) Istvanovich of Hugo, Martin (Faith) Schmidt of Forest Lake, Beverly (Dave) Hanson of Shafer; many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents Vernon and Joan Schmidt; great-grandson Cooper Schmidt; siblings Mark Schmidt and Danny Schmidt.

Pastor Cary Johnson will officiate at an informal service for David: 7:00 PM; Tuesday, (6/25/19) with a gathering time for family and friends from 4 - 8 PM all at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church of Rush City. Casual attire recommended (Hawaiian shirts acceptable).

Memorials may be directed to St. Jude’s Hospital, Wounded Warriors or donor’s choice.

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the: Funeral and Cremation Service of Rush City ~ Olson Chapel.
